When you are on the hunt for a new home, there are numerous items on your must-have list. Maybe you want some land to grow. Perhaps you want an office space or a playroom. Are outdoor living and a pool on your list? There are incredibly exciting aspects of searching for a new home. But what happens when you buy a pool home without safety precautions in place? How do you create a safe outdoor living space for the children and teenagers in your life?

Home Drowning Statistics

The statistics on home drowning are alarming. Data from the CDC shows one-fifth of all drowning deaths occur to children under the age of 14. Children ages 1 to 4 are most likely to drown in the swimming pool at their own homes.

While the statistics are distressing, there are steps you can take today to ensure pool safety in your new home. First and foremost, children must always be under adult supervision. You may think you can walk away for a few moments, but this is not true. It only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown. Whatever you need to do can wait. It is always a wise idea to have your CPR certification. It is a skill you never want to use, but it is one that is necessary.

Layers of Pool Safety

Experts agree that when it comes to pool safety, the more layers of protection you have, the better. Let’s start with the doors that lead out to your pool area. We suggest adding door alarms that will alert you when someone exits or enters. Why? It is just another safety precaution to alert you to possible danger. Next up, install a fence at least 4 feet in height around your pool. The gate to your fence needs to be locked at all times, no exceptions. A gate alarm is also a great idea to help protect everyone in your household.

Drowning can occur in the blink of an eye. However, you do not have to be a statistic. Stay vigilant and install safety measures allowing you to enjoy your pool without fear.
