Here are some great tips to give the illusion that you are indeed home!
Keep Up Appearances
Your lawn is a telltale sign that no one is at home. Overgrown grass and unkempt shrubbery are dead giveaways. If you won’t be gone for long and do not have a lawn service, be sure to freshen up your lawn before you leave. Trim limbs that are close to windows too. If you will be gone for longer, consider hiring someone to mow and trim while you are away.
Light Up
Exterior lighting is an important part of home security. A dark home is an unsafe one. You have several options when it comes to exterior lighting. Motion activated lights are a great way to reap the benefits of outdoor lighting without too much expense. Because these security lights are not on all the time, you are not paying for electricity at all times.
Flood lights are another option. There are several options on this front. You can choose the conventional halogen type which give off a bright light at all times. They also consume the most electricity. If you want an environmentally friendly option, you can go for solar flood lights. These absorb sunlight as the day goes on and utilize it to power the lights.
Lock Up
This one is a no-brainer but it is important. In the hustle and bustle of preparing to leave, it can be easy to forget to check all the doors and windows. Make sure that you take a few moments to do just that. You also want to make sure your garage is taken care of too.
Take Care of the Mail
An overloaded mailbox or front door loaded up with packages makes for an easy target. When you head out of town, be sure that someone is collecting your mail and packages for you. If you will be gone for an extended period, consider putting a stop to your mail all together.
