7 Tips for Moving on a Budget

Taxes, public speaking, and moving… three things most Americans can agree are on their list of less than favorite things to do.  A Mother’s Touch Movers in Melbourne, FL has completed thousands of moves successfully throughout Florida over 30 years in business; moving on a budget is actually one of our favorite things to do! As a full-service moving company, we have learned a thing or two over the years to make the nerve-racking process of moving, less overwhelming, more affordable, and smooth. And what to look out for when moving on a budget.

Moving On a Budget? Consider These Options to Make Your Move More Affordable

There are a variety of options offered by quality, reliable moving company to save you time, hassle, and money.  For example, maybe you just need boxes, bubble wrap, and other supplies because you have a reliable crew of family and friends to help with the packing.  The experts will know the quantity and type of packing materials you will need whether you’re moving priceless antiques, tools, dishes, electronics, or oversized items.  You name it, they will have what you need to transport your items smoothly and safely.

If you have access to a truck or trailer, but don’t want to run the risk or timeliness of improperly packing your own items, you could hire professional movers to handle that task and provide the moving supplies.  Then you would be responsible for the transporting.  The professionals will meet you to unload and unpack saving you some money on the actual move from point A to point B.

At A Mother’s Touch Movers, whether you just need help loading and unloading, or the works, packing, moving, and unpacking everything for you, we customize each client’s moving experience to meet budgets and exceed expectations.  Here are moving on a budget tips to make your move go smoothly:

1. Collect All the Packing Supplies You Will Need Before You Get Started

It’s been said that you really know who your real friends are when you need help moving.  So, once you have the real friends ready to get started and complete the process as seamlessly as possible, avoid the disruption of running out of supplies and materials. It will frustrate your helpers and slow down the effort.  It’s not just sturdy boxes and bubble wrap that you’ll need.  It’s a few pairs of scissors, endless amounts of tape, Sharpies or label maker, snacks and water for your kind helpers, and of course, have a flexible attitude and an infinite amount of patience on hand.

2. Enlist Help and Pay It Forward

There is no award for accomplishing a move by yourself, and it’s far less likely to go smooth. Enlist help from family and friends and pay it forward.  If you are hiring professionals to help, be open to their guidance. They are trained and have an abundance of experience in moving complicated and heavy items from 60” TVs, priceless collectibles, and oversized, oddly shaped items, like a piano, billiard table, or lawn mower.  If your team is friends and family, dole out the assignments accordingly.  Children can help with toys and stuffed animals, Grandma can help with towels and linens while seated, responsible teens can lift the heavy items, help ensure power cords are packed with the electronics they belong to and weed out old DVDs, scratched CDs, etc. while you focus on more sensitive and fragile items.

3. Do Not Move Your Junk

If you haven’t used it in years or don’t remember what it is or what it is for, don’t pack it.  What is the point of unpacking it at your new junk free destination and letting another year go by while figuring out what it is or if it will ever work again?  Moving is the perfect time to declutter. Your junk could be someone else’s treasure.  Sell it, gift it, give it, or trash it, but don’t move it.

4. Pack Room by Room

To eliminate unpacking confusion, avoid packing up the home office and then grabbing something from the kitchen or bathroom, because you have the “perfect space” left in the box before you seal it.  You are better off filling the space with padding if needed and properly labeling the box.  Inevitably, that one item from the kitchen or bathroom will be the one you are looking for in all of the home office boxes.  Pack room by room to the extent you can.

5. Label Accurately and Specifically

Proper labeling is one the single most simple yet helpful things you can do for yourself and those helping you.  If you don’t move or unpack immediately, it is extremely convenient to know exactly what is in each box, especially if your items will be temporarily held in a storage unit or the garage.  Take a quick minute to be specific – “Mom’s coats and hats” is far better than “clothes.”  Also, some items are higher priority to unpack such as important documents and temperature sensitive items (candles and classic photos), so it’s best if they can be conveniently located. And, if your new house or apartment is move-in ready, the labels –which can be easily done with a Sharpie or a label maker—serve as a “roadmap” for those helping you unload and sort into their final location.

6. Get Started With Seasonal or Lesser Used Items

Holiday decorations, seasonal sporting equipment (surfboards or snow skis), seasonal clothing, collectibles, and high school or college memories / memorabilia are just some of the things you will not need once you place your home on the market or your lease is ending.  If you are listing your house, real estate agents or any friends or family with “for sale by owner” experience will tell you that your personal items, while meaningful to you, are probably clutter for others.

7. Give Up Some Control, Especially if You Are Working, Caregiving, Studying, or Parenting While Moving

Unless you are hiring a top notch, A+ Better Business Bureau and 5-star rated moving company such as A Mother’s Touch Movers in Melbourne, FL, from packing to final unpacking, there will be a thing, or two, or 10 that goes wrong.  Cut yourself some slack as you oversee and manage this entire process and the other priorities in your life simultaneously.  The Florida real estate market is one of, if not the, hottest in the country thanks to northerners fleeing states with outrageous taxes, business unfriendliness, and unreasonable COVID-19 restrictions. Your home is likely to receive offers the moment it is listed from buyers wanting to close and move in immediately.  This creates a high demand on securing a reputable moving company, that is licensed, bonded, and insured to complete your entire (or portions of your) moving process. If you are going the DIY route, be prepared by having your help, supplies, and method of transporting your life’s possessions at the ready.  Lastly, if it takes you a minute, a month, or months to unpack and organize, that is okay too.

Finally, Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy Your New Home

Having planned ahead, selected a quality moving company or recruited family and friends, finding patience, and relinquishing some control, your moving experience should be an exciting step in a new beginning for you and your family.
