Pack Your Bathroom Better

It is easy to assume that packing a small space like a bathroom won’t take much time. Think about it, if your bathroom is like most others it is pretty small. There’s not a ton of square footage to attend to. You probably don’t have precious art or incredibly fragile items that will need to be packed with extra care. Nope, your bathroom should be the easiest room in the house to pack…right? What if we told you that if you wait to pack up your bathroom for last, you could be waiting longer than you anticipated to finish in entirety. This is because your bathroom can be deceptively complex when it comes to packing up and moving on. Shakespeare once wrote, “Though she be but little, she is fierce.” And this certainly applies to bathrooms. Here are some tips and tricks to get you packed up and moved on.

Bathrooms tend to be collectors of expired medications and empty tubes of lotions and whatnots. Gross towels, ripped washcloths, unused shampoo, and the like are all on this list. All of these items get lumped in together and stowed underneath the sink for a rainy day. Well, the rain is here, your move. You never got around to sorting and tossing so go ahead and do it now. You do not want to take these unused and past date items with you. Let’s begin with medications. Assess the dates on all the bottles you have. Are they still good? Keep them. Are they passed their prime? Toss them away. What if you just aren’t sure? Well, if the label cannot be deciphered or is missing, it needs to go. If the pills look like they have changed in appearance and/or consistency, get rid of them. Do you still use the prescription or is it outdated? If so, you will want to get rid of those treatments as well.

Next up, go through all of your towels, washcloths, and hand towels. You will want to ask yourself some questions as you begin this process:

  • Do you use them anymore?
  • Are they stained beyond recognition?
  • If not, can they be donated?
  • Can they be recycled into garage towels or used for cleaning around the house?

Once you know the answers to these questions, you can decide whether or not to keep, donate, or toss.

Remember that lotion you bought in 2008? Do you still have it lurking under the sink? If so, it needs to go. Most skin care and body care products do not come with an expiration date, however, skin care products tend to have a shelf life of around one year while hair care products may be good for up to 2 years. Makeup is a different story. Mascara should remain okay for around 6 months and liquid products such as foundations and concealers are good for up to a year. However, if your toiletries or makeup smells off, is broken, or has lost its luster, just get rid of it.
