Don’t Pack The Roaches!

If you’re getting ready to move away from a house or apartment that’s infested with roaches, the last thing you want to do is bring roaches over to the new place. Leave those bugs behind! Here are a few steps you can take to make sure you’re not packing those roaches along with you so that you’re not cohabiting with those dirty bugs once again in your new home.

It may be obvious, but we’ve got to say it; check everything for roaches before you pack it in a box or moving container. Carefully inspect each item. Open all containers, boxes, and anything with a lid to ensure there are no creepy cockroaches… or any bugs for that matter.

Using plastic bins with secure lids will keep roaches out. Not only do these secure plastic bins save you money (you don’t have to repurchase boxes), but they also allow you to take your time unpacking, as you won’t have to remove your items from the bin right away. Make sure the bins are completely sealed. Use clear plastic bags to pack linens and pillows. If you must use boxes, buy new boxes. Used boxes can be infected by roaches, so if you use old boxes, make sure to check them thoroughly before bringing them into your new home.

Once you’ve packed your bin full of roach-free items, get them out of your home. Remember, your place has roaches, so get your items out of your home as quickly as possible so roaches don’t have time to infiltrate your packed belongings. Take them to a friend’s house or pack them in a car and take them to a storage unit.

Roaches love dark, warm, hidden environments… like a sock drawer. It’s a good idea to wash all your clothes before you pack them, especially anything that’s in a drawer or shelf. Even the clothes that hang on a clothes hanger in your closet are susceptible to roaches, so inspect and wash those too if you can. Dry them, pack them, and remove them.

Appliances are perfect hiding spots for roaches, so check them thoroughly. Also, check any plants, pots, or gardening supplies because bugs love dirt. If you’ve got plants that have lived inside, you may want to leave them behind in a roach-infested situation. You’ll want to check any furniture – check underneath and inside the coils, too. If you can, wash your cushions, too.

Before it’s time to unpack, inspect everything carefully. Yes, you’ve already checked everything before you’ve packed, but bugs could have gotten in without you knowing. So, check for signs of bugs before you unpack. Then, unpack in the garage or the patio, and shake out clothing and other belongings before you bring them inside.

It takes a lot of time and energy to check and recheck everything. It’s kind of a hassle to take all of these precautions to make sure you don’t bring cockroaches with you to your new place. But isn’t it worth it?
