The holidays provide a time for celebrating, not only the season but times gone by. With each box of ornaments and holiday décor you open, you may feel a sense of nostalgia as memories of Christmases from long ago. The homemade dough gingerbread ornament you made when you were a child perfectly represents your relationship with your grandmother. That silly Santa Claus dressed in long johns reminds you of the year you spent a snowy Christmas morning by the fire. Whatever your memories of the past are, you probably what to keep them intact. Packing Christmas ornaments can be a challenge, but with these tips from A Mother’s Touch Movers, your packing can be a cinch.

First off, make sure you have the proper storage containers for your precious ornaments. Specialty container stores and big box retailers alike make specialized ornament boxes designed specifically for your tree décor. This one from Amazon.com is a bit on the fancy side. Sterilite makes a simpler model that is clear and contains ready-made dividers to keep your ornaments separate and contained. Whatever you choose, having the proper storage container will make storing your ornaments much easier. If you cannot find an ornament box suited to your needs, ask a liqueur store for their partitioned boxes. These are great substitutes!

This next tip requires a little forethought on your part. Many ornaments are considered collectibles and/or are very delicate. For ornaments such as these, do your best to keep the original packaging. Knowing exactly where the ornament belongs and keeping it in the packaging it came it will ensure it stays safe for years to come. However, you can absolutely get by without that original box and cushioning, so don’t worry if you tossed the package right after opening your ornament. You may just have to do a little extra work to keep it protected.

If you don’t have original packaging or are looking for a safer way to store your ornaments, here’s an idea: Ziplock bags. These handy baggies are for more than just sandwiches and snacks. Real Simple suggests putting each ornament into its own bag and then generously surrounding it with tissue paper when storing it. Using the leftover tissue wrapping from Christmas gifts is a great way to recycle and keep your ornaments safe. For ornaments made from food items like noodles or dough, the baggie suggestion is perfect. Keeping these homemade ornaments in their own container will protect them from damage and keep pests at bay.

Packing up this year’s Christmas ornaments does not have to put a damper on the holiday season. It can actually be enjoyable if you follow these simple tips and remember the reason for the season. Happy Holidays from all of us at A Mother’s Touch.
