The Move Talk With Your Children

When it comes to talking about the decision to move with your kids, focus on giving them the overall picture and answering their questions. Anxiety can make moving tough on them, so help them feel more comfortable and assured with this how-to list from A Mother’s Touch Movers.

Q: Why are we even moving? Now?

Keep your answer simple, honest, and straightforward, such as saying “new job for your dad.” Emphasize the positive aspects like the ability to visit grandparents or exploring a new neighborhood. If your kids share negative feelings, discuss the situation thoroughly by asking them what other fears or questions they have about the move.

Q: Where and when are we moving?

Provide as much information as you can when your children ask about the logistics. Younger kids may still have trouble conceptualizing time, so circle the date on the family calendar and cross off the days until it arrives.
Since stability at home is so important for kids, anxiety can crop up when moving appears to be disruptive and unknown. Show your children on the map where the new home is located, and share photos of the home and neighborhood. Take them to the new school if your family is moving within the same city.

Q: Will I get my own room? What will it look like?

Answering this question affords you with chance to excite your kids about the new home and move in general. Describe and draw the layout of their new room and ask them to help you redecorate and arrange their toys, furniture, etc. Tell them to draw pictures of their dream room and use their imagination when designing. Older children will probably make a virtual board of ideas and images.

Q: What about my friends?

Remind kids they can keep in touch these days very easily: online chatting, phone, etc. If not moving too far away, remind them the kids they can visit with their friends again soon. Teenagers will have a harder time adjusting to leaving friends behind. During the teen years, large changes can feel like the end of the world. Be as encouraging and sensitive as possible with those who appear thrown off or depressed by the idea of moving.

Q: What will my new school be like?

A new school environment can be scary for kids moving to a new neighborhood or city. Making new friends, the new teachers, and a new building can be overwhelming. Explain what will be the same about the new school (recess, lunch, lockers), as well as the differences (new teachers, new classmates). Take them on a tour before they begin, if possible. Be prepared to answer questions as positively and thoroughly as possible, and perhaps have family meetings regularly to check in with worries.
