There are so many things to love about our home state of Florida. One of the incredible draws to the Melbourne, FL area is the weather that allows for fun in the sun almost year-round. Miles and miles of sandy beaches make it easy to fall in love with our hometown. Not only is a quick dip in the ocean always available, for many Space Coast residents all they have to do is also open the back door and head to their backyard oasis for a swim. According to statistics from the Florida County Property Appraisers, there are over 43,000 residential pools in Brevard County alone. Pools are sought after attractions for potential buyers and oftentimes a huge plus for sellers. However, they also come with risks. If you currently have a pool or are in the market for a home that has one, you need to be aware of the risks and take action to prevent accidents. A Mother’s Touch Movers wants you to stay safe. We have assisted people in Melbourne and Palm Bay with residential and commercial moves for over 30 years and care very much about our community. That’s why we’d like to share some statistics and tips about pool safety to keep our fellow Brevard County residents and their families safe.

According to the CDC, over 3,000 non-boating related unintentional drowning deaths occur each year. Every day there are at least 10 deaths from drowning and it is the leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1-4 with the majority of deaths taking place in a home pool. Florida ranks highest in unintentional drowning deaths as well, making water safety a top priority for everyone who lives here. As you can see, it is crucial that you have safeguards in place that provide protection for everyone. The key takeaway here is that water safety is the responsibility of everyone. Read on for water safety tips to ensure that your backyard pool doesn’t become the scene of a terrible accident.

First and foremost, supervise children at all times. Even if you are confident that your child is a competent swimmer, never leave them alone in the water. Drowning can occur in minutes and is often silent. Looking away for even a moment can lead to disaster. Any time there is a child near the water a designated adult should be in place to keep an eye out. Don’t skip this step and don’t walk away. Nothing is more important than your child’s safety. It is also highly recommended that you know CPR and are capable of administering first-aid should the need arise. Several local organizations offer CPR classes in our area.

The next thing you need to do is secure the area. It isn’t enough to have a lock on your patio door, especially where children are involved. Water Safety Florida recommends that every home with a pool has a physical barrier that prevents unsupervised children from entering the space. Examples of a barrier include a pool fence with a gate that locks on its own, alarms on all doors leading to the pool area, and an approved pool cover. The state of Florida is so serious about preventing residential pool accidents that it passed the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act requiring pools built after the year 2000 to have at least one barrier from an outlined list. For more information on what is considered and approved barrier, see here.

Your home pool doesn’t have to be a source of fear, but you need to recognize the potential dangers and take steps to protect your loved ones. Take all the steps you can to reduce risk and save lives. You will never regret going the extra mile.
