First and foremost, you will want to do an inspection of all smoke detectors and install carbon monoxide detectors if your new place does not currently have them. Make sure you put in fresh batteries and that they work. Locate fire extinguishers as well. If you do not have any, we highly recommend purchasing at least two. Put one in the garage and the other inside where it is easily accessible in case of an emergency. We know you’d probably rather be shopping for new curtains and area rugs, but you cannot place a high enough value on the health and well-being of your family. On this same note, figure out an evacuation plan should you need to escape a fire. Go over the plan with your family. This is a great way to familiarize yourself with your new surroundings and keep safety in check too. No one ever anticipates a fire, but should one occur you need to be prepared, and with the holidays just around the corner, it’s a smart idea.
Your new home was undoubtedly looked over by a home inspector but there could have been things he or she missed. Before you get too comfortable, check all exterior doors to make sure they close properly. While you are at it, look over the locks. You may want to purchase new deadbolts and add additional safety measures to keep intruders out. Look over all windows too and make sure they close and lock securely. Again, we know this isn’t thrilling, but it is wise. Once you feel confident that your home is safe and secure you can move on to the fun stuff like decorating and settling in.
