So you’ve moved into your new residence, thanks to your expert moving company in Melbourne, A Mother’s Touch Movers experienced movers based in Brevard County, FL. Now it’s time to unpack and settle into your new home.

Protect your home, yourself, and your family with the following kitchen safety tips. Not surprisingly, the kitchen is where most fires in the home start.

Every kitchen should have the following safety essentials:

  • Fire Extinguisher: An ABC Dry Chemical fire extinguisher is a great option because it will not accelerate grease fires. Know how to operate it before a catastrophe strikes.
  • Smoke Detector: A smoke detector with a pause button is good in case of false alarms. (Neighboring rooms to the kitchen should also have smoke detectors, by the way.)
  • Oven Mitts: invest in a thick, durable pair.

Prevent a fire from starting with these safety practices below:

  • Never leave the food you are cooking unattended, especially if there are children in the area.
  • Clean up the cooking area during and after to prevent grease buildup, slippery surfaces, and unsafe conditions.
  • Don’t keep anything that is flammable near the stove. For example, curtains, potholders, dishtowels, and recipe books should be stored away from the stove.
  • Before cooking, keep yourself safe by dressing the part. Roll up your sleeves, keep shirts tucked in, and tie back long hair.
  • Heating cooking oil too quickly can easily start a fire, so do it slowly.

If your kids are helping you cook in the kitchen, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Children should be kept at least 3 feet away from the stove while you are cooking in order to avoid accidents and spills.
  • Use the back burners while the kids are nearby, and turn pot handles toward the center of the range away from their reach.
  • Instruct your children to stay away from hot items can burn so they don’t burn themselves.
  • Do not hold a child while cooking.

In case fire does start despite the precautions you take, remember the following:

  • Water and grease do not mix. Never pour water on a grease fire because it will spread. Use a fire extinguisher instead.
  • Has a pan caught fire? Slide a lid over the pan and turn off the stove burner, and then leave the lid on until it is completely cool.
  • Keep the oven or microwave door shut if a fire starts and turn off the heat. Get out of the room and seek help if the flames do not go out immediately.
  • Remember the phrase: stop, drop, and roll. If your clothing catches on fire, smother it on the kitchen floor before getting out of the house.

Stay safe in the kitchen and your new home. Remember, A Mother’s Touch Movers is the company to trust when packing and moving in Brevard County, FL!
