There is no strict definition but rather a cluster of characteristics that help determine what is considered unsafe. The Environmental Protection Agency has guidelines here.
How Should I Handle Hazardous Materials?
Once you have identified what you have that is considered hazardous, the next step is to figure out what to do with it all. First, NEVER put chemicals in the trash. Don’t put them in the recycle bin either. This is not safe for you and waste management will not accept them as well. Don’t flush your unused chemical waste and for goodness sake, do not toss it into a storm drain! If you have a container with a worn out and/or unreadable label, it is best to set it aside rather than trashing it. Remember, these materials can be deadly. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to household chemicals.
Where in Brevard County Can I Dispose of Hazardous Waste?
At this point, you may be thinking, “Where’s the good info you promised us?” Well, don’t fret. Here it comes! You can dispose of household hazardous waste at 3 different locations in Brevard County!! Hooray, your problem is solved. Brevard County Waste Management will take up to 25 gallons of liquid waste per family per year in containers less than 5 gallons in size. When you bring your hazardous waste to your chosen facility, make sure that the liquids are in their original containers if at all possible. Pack the containers in a sturdy box and do not let the chemicals mix with one another. The pros in the Department of Household Waste Management will take care of the rest.
