Living on the Space Coast is nothing short of a dream. Sandy beaches and a tropical climate along with a plethora of employment opportunities in the medical and technological fields bring families of all ages to Melbourne and the surrounding areas. We have had the pleasure of providing top-notch moving services to many making the transition to Brevard. We serve at the start and want to continue to provide assistance to residents.

Storm season is in full swing here and we want everyone in Brevard to stay safe. Courtesy of A Mother’s Touch Movers, your expert movers on the Space Coast in FL below are some tips on how to be prepared and aware of potential electrical hazards. These are especially important before, during, and after a severe storm.

  • In Brevard County, FL, summer is storm season. Beginning around the first of June, get the trees on your property trimmed. This will help minimize their impact during storms on your home and in your neighborhood. Don’t try to do it yourself; only specially trained line-clearing professionals can trim shrubs and trees around power lines.
  • Clear away debris before you hear a hurricane warning announcement, because when they happen, trash pickup is suspended.
  • In the event you have someone in your house who uses electric-powered, life sustaining medical equipment, you should have an emergency plan for backup power or relocation when a storm warning is issued.
  • Before a storm hits, lower your TV antenna or satellite dish. Just make sure to turn off and unplug the TV, and avoid power lines, before lowering the antenna or dish.
  • All swimming pool pumps and filters should be turned off and wrapped in waterproof materials before a storm.
  • Before a storm, turn off and unplug any electrical equipment.
  • If you are working on a ladder, note the location of power lines before you begin working. Be sure that ladders are far enough away so that you and the ends of the tools you’re using never come within 10 feet of power lines.
  • After a storm, do not travel until it is safe to do so. Steer clear of flooded areas that could be hiding downed power lines. Always stay away from downed lines and anything that is in contact with a downed power line. Notify FPL and 911 of downed lines and other hazardous conditions.

Don’t drive in damaged areas after a storm, because you could jeopardize your safety and also interfere with restoration efforts. If your power goes out after a storm, disconnect appliances that are still plugged in. Turn off the main breaker and turn off all wall switches, too.
