According to information from the National Association of Home Builders and the Census, new home sizes in the United States have risen. Over time, the size of homes has steadily increased and shows no signs of stopping. Data indicates that new homes were a little over 1,000 square feet in the 1920s and that number has steadily risen since. In 1990, the average size new home was 2,080 sq. ft and the most recent data shows that in the first quarter of 2018, mean (average) home square footage soared to 2,641 sq. ft and trends only support increased home size as time goes by. Let’s face it, Americans have a lot of stuff! What to do when you have to pack up your home but you want to do so in an environmentally friendly way? Here at A Mother’s Touch Movers, we know that many of our Melbourne, FL clients want to move their homes in a way that is kind to the environment. Read on for ways you can make your move a green one!

The first rule of thumb when it comes to lessening the environmental impact of your move is to use what you have. When the time comes to start the process of packing, begin looking around your home to see what packing supplies you already own. When you use your old plastic storage, cardboard boxes, tissue paper, leftover bubble wrap, etc., you are not only being eco-friendly but saving money too. It’s a win-win all the way around. Look for a container that you already have and repurpose them for the move. If they are already packed up, you get to skip a step and load them as-is.

One way to make sure that you will have boxes when the time comes is to break them down and store them throughout the year. Every Amazon shipment or package you receive in a larger sized cardboard box can be used again, so why not take advantage of the free boxes? When you get a gift containing tissue paper, you can always fold the paper up and set it aside for later use.

Towels, blankets, and sheets from your own home are another way to pack green! We’ve all got these lying around and repurposing them to wrap mirrors, cover furniture, or cushion fragile items is a great way to save time, money, and resources.

After the move, you will probably have packing supplies left over. One way to make a positive impact is to donate any you no longer need. You can take totes and fabric items in good condition to resale stores and let them live on with someone else. You can also give them away to someone who is in the process of their own move. Cardboard boxes that are damaged can be recycled and if you have any in usable condition, let them serve another person by giving them away.

Eco-friendly moving does not mean that you have to spend tons of money. By using what you already have and filling in the gaps as needed, you can get all of your stuff packed safely and feel good about the process.
