The decision to move a loved one in an assisted living facility is never an easy one. However, at times it is ultimately the best choice for you and the senior you love. Did you know that A Mother’s Touch Movers is dedicated to moving seniors into the best assisted living facilities Brevard County has to offer? It is one of our many specialties and we cherish the opportunity to help see your loved ones settled and at home in their new place of residence.

Are you currently in the process of choosing a facility for someone you care about? If so, here are some things to consider when choosing a new home for them. Moving is never easy, even at the best of times. When it comes to making this transition, we want you and everyone involved to experience a sense of peace. Here are some ways you can do just that.

Talk About It

It is hard for many seniors to accept that they are no longer capable of living on their own. One of the many benefits of assisted living facilities is the wide range of care options they provide. When you begin to have the conversation about transitioning, be sure to remember that this will be a huge change for the senior in your life. Compassion will carry you far during these conversations. It is also wise to tout the benefits of such a residential community. Be sure to include all the socialization opportunities that are available. Let your senior know this move is not because you do not care for them but rather because you do! Assure them that you will still play a vital role in their care and a move to assisted living does not change this.

Whatever you do, listen. Giving your loved one the opportunity to discuss their misgivings and fears will allow them the freedom and peace that comes from being heard.

Know the New Space

Once you have found the perfect place, ask for a floor plan of the new home. Knowing exactly how much space and how it is laid out will allow you to know how to approach packing.

As with any move, there are belongings that simply will not fit into the new dwelling space. Once you know how much room is available, you will have a better sense of what can be brought along and what needs to go. On that note, it helps to inventory all the things inside your senior’s current home. If need be, have appraisals made in preparation for selling off anything that you cannot pack.

You will want to take special care when it comes to selling, storing, or getting rid of items that your loved ones currently have. Be sure to maintain an open line of communication about what is going on with them. We all have ties to the things we own and it can be hard to let go. Keep this in mind.

Make Arrangements

You will want to contact all utility services and make them aware of a change in residence. Visit the post office as well and fill out the necessary change of address forms. Communicate with the insurance company and find out if they cover belongings during a move for your protection.

If you have not already done so, make arrangements with a moving company to ensure that everything arrives safely. A Mother’s Touch Movers can help you with this. We sell all the necessary moving supplies and offer a wide range of moving services. We’d love to help!
